To us, Tavira can only be described as ‘Stratford in the Sun’. It is a beautiful & stunning Portuguese town that commands waterfront residence on the picturesque River Gilao.   The Tavira riverside location is the heart of Tavira and holds a wonderful selection of shops & restaurants. It has been cleverly designed & considered so that the modern entwines in perfect balance with the old, so not detracting from Tavira’s beauty.

 

To match its striking appearance, Tavira has a strong & remarkable history whose origins can be dated back to around 2,000 BC.  It is also said to be one of the most architecturally pleasing towns on the Algarve with the greatest number of churches & chapels located in one town.  Tavira is steeped in art and history, and as well as dating back to Roman times, it was also occupied by the  Phoenicians, the Moors and was of great importance due to its fishing industry – in fact the remains of the Moorish castle is located just over 0.5km (about 550 yards) away from our apartment.

Tavira is located in the unspoilt East Algarve and sits right next to the beautiful Nature Reserve Park of ‘Ria Formosa’.  The Eastern Algarve is more traditionally Portuguese than the west and enjoys beautiful long, sandy beaches & warm, clear waters - unlike the colder Atlantic influence of the west!For the golf lovers and addicts there are is a very healthy choice of courses to be played – 6 courses which range from 5 to 15 minute short drives away.Crucially, Tavira has an excellent infrastructure with links to Faro, Spain & the West Algarve.  Travel to Tavira can be easily achieved via plane, train & automobile – and all relatively inexpensive too!
